California Mid State Fair 2010

It’s Fair Time once again at the Adelaide Inn! After a few days of watching our guests head over to the fairgrounds each day, I couldn’t help but wonder if the fair was any different this year than the last. Perhaps I was missing out somehow in my resolve to stave off the crowds and stay home this year? After conveniently receiving a free admission ticket, I decided to go and see for myself.

Years ago, the Mid-State Fair began as an agricultural event, and today hundreds of local youth bring their animals to the fairgrounds for show and auction. I began my visit here. As I ambled between the livestock buildings I was reminded of my summers spent raising a hog for the fair’s livestock auction. On Saturday these same animals will be available for purchase. Those who would like to purchase an animal can arrive a few minutes early to register and pick up their auction paddle.

After my nostalgic walk through the barns, a friend and I headed over to the food vendors where we indulged in the infamous deep-fried snickers. Controversial as it may be, few can deny that the warm, gooey, batter-wrapped chocolate bar is anything but delicious. Once we had our fill of corn dogs, funnel cakes, and turkey legs, we stopped by a few of the commercial buildings. Here one can buy anything from teeth-whitening services to organic makeup and local designer clothing. I stocked up on a few “necessities” and walked outside before I was tempted by anything else. A local dance studio was performing at the Fort Frontier stage and a surmountable crowd had formed to see the show. Over at the carnival we found some traditional rides and attractions as well as some newer small roller coasters. If one were feeling adventurous I would recommend the Graviton, a UFO shaped disc that spins at top speed making your cheeks widen into an involuntary smile.

As my day at the fair came to an end I decided that the fair hadn’t changed at all – and perhaps, that was the best part. Check out pictures of my fun and post pictures of yours on the Adelaide Inn, Paso Robles Facebook page!

After a long day of traveling across the country, we were exhausted. We were pleasantly surprised when we entered our room. The updated room was so clean and comfortable. The young man at the desk was very helpful and polite. I hope to visit Adelaide Inn again!

Paso Robles Wildflowers and Wine

It’s time for Spring Cleaning and I’m not talking about the house. Instead of clearing out the cobwebs in that corner of the house, why not clear out the cobwebs that have left a winter weave in our minds.

For those of you who find joy in flowers, this is your time of year. Let’s wipe those cobwebs from our minds. Fields of California Poppies, Owls Clover, Chinese houses, Larkspurs, Shooting Stars, Goldfields, Lupines, Blazing Stars, Baby Blue Eyes, Indian Warrior, Cream Cups, Woolly Blue Curls, and Violets are the creation of a painters’ palette. “I perhaps owe having become a painter to flowers. “ ~Claude Monet

Inspiration comes and goes but in a field of wildflowers inspiration only grows. Photograph or paint nature’s palette and make it your own. Sit silently among the earthy perfumes and let the breeze carry your thoughts.

Find restoration in nature, if only for a day. Take off and explore nature’s celebration of Spring, the Wildflower. The back roads of Paso Robles offer many Treasures; one gem is an area east of the Adelaide Inn. Here the “The Earth Laughs in Flowers”- Ralph Waldo Emerson.

Take A Winter Wine Tour on the Plesant Valley Wine Trail, San Miguel, CA

The Pleasant Valley Wine Trail is the newest group of Paso Robles wineries and businesses joining
together to provide visitors with one easy route to premium wine tasting and olive oil sampling.

On a crisp winter day, a friend and I meandered down the country roads to visit a few of the wineries located
on the Pleasant Valley Wine Trail. The wineries we visited are all small producer family owned and operated so not only was I able to taste some award winning wines and olive oil, I met the people who pour their hearts and souls into the land to produce a dream come true, their own wines!

Ranchita Canyon Vineyard is owned and operated by Bill and Teresa Hinrichs. I met Teresa and as she lead me to the tasting room which is also a barrel room. It was cold that afternoon but as Teresa spoke about
the wines Ranchita Canyon was producing, her warmth filled the room. After tasting a 2007 Zinfandel,
2005 Cabernet Franc, 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon and a 2006 Sauvignon Blanc, it was very difficult deciding
which wine to purchase. We choose the 2005 Cabernet Franc and the 2006 Sauvignon Blanc.
Winery Open Friday to Monday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m
Ranchita Canyon Vineyard: 3439 Ranchita Canyon Road, San Miguel, CA 93451. 805-467-9448
www.ranchitacanyonvineyard.com

Tackitt Family Vineyard is owned and operated by Leon, his wife Cindy and his father Boyd Tackitt.
Leon’s grandfather had started the small vineyard back in 1970, planting Gewürztraminer vines.
“With my retirement from a 28-year career in the U.S. Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal community
coming into view, my wife and I saw our modest family vineyard as a wonderful possibility. In the
summer of 1998, Cindy and I decided to take what my grandfather had started to the next level,
and Tackitt Family Vineyards began.”
The tasting room is also in the barrel room. The Tackitts are in the process of building a
tasting room just below the barrel room. We had to try the Gewürztraminer. Cindy brought out
a small tray of cheese and crackers. My friend remarked that this wine would go really well
with Thai food. Leon’s face lit up and his eyes sparkled. It was like Leon was saying without
words, “you understand my wine.” We also tried the 2005 Merlot and 2007 Swisscolena Zinfandel.
Again we were faced with a hard choice and purchased the 2007 Swisscolena Zinfandel.
Tackitt Family Vineyard: 6640 Von Dollen Road, San Miguel, CA 93451.
Please call 805 296-0866 www.tackittfamilyvineyards.com

Terrace Hill Olive Oil is owned and operated by Uwe and Martina Henze. Martina told me that
you “retire to do the things that you love”. Martina was born in France, has lived in many
U.S cities including N.Y. Her husband, Uwe, was born in Germany, was a chef in Europe and
the U.S. and keeps his eye on the olive orchard. Although Martina was born in France she has,
over years come to love to culinary experience of Italy and Spain and this shows in her
olive oil produced on site.
The olive oil tasting room is right next to their house. The view from Terrace Hill Olive Oil Co
is reminiscent of the hillsides in Tuscany. As the olive oil produced are award-winning Tuscan
varietals olive oils and flavored oils. The olive oil is the best I have tasted. I learned the
correct way to taste olive oil. You do not dunk the bread into the small cup. When tasting olive
oil, you pour the small tasting in your mouth and breathe in so the oil coats the inside of your
mouth and let it linger. We could not leave without purchasing the Estate Reserve Extra Virgin Olive Oil.
Terrace Hill Olive Oil: Hours of operation: Saturday and Sunday from 11a.m. to 5 p.m.
2620 California Poppy Lane, San Miguel, CA 93451 805-467-1906 www.terracehilloliveco.com

I am not going to go into detail about the specifics of each wine because I believe that each person
is their own connoisseur of wine. I will say that the area produces excellent Zinfandels and the wineries
are experimenting with different varietals, such as Cabernet Franc and Malbec. I will tell you that we
thoroughly enjoyed all of our purchases. We plan to go back to the Pleasant Valley Wine Trail to try the other wineries.www.pleasantvalleywinetrail.com

This is just a small sampling of what is happening all over the Paso Robles countryside.
People doing what they love --- a passion, understanding and commitment to the land that
surrounds them. Their labors have produced award winning wines and olive oil. To have a
sense of the land and the growing process completes a cycle, creating a oneness with the
original pioneers of the Paso Robles Region.

Two Wine Tasting Tips I would like to share with you. Research the wineries before you go.
You know what types of wine you enjoy or would like to try. If you are new to the Wine Tasting
experience, I would suggest taking a guided wine tour. The guides know the Paso Robles Wine Region
very well and can make suggestions based on your likes and dislikes.
This is the time to explore wineries and the surrounding countryside around Paso Robles. The leaves are starting to turn, the temperatures are growing cooler, and the crowds have diminished. You can drive out to wineries and the attendants will be able to give you more attention and educate you about their wines and brands. Going out into the back country will give you a nice rural experience as well as a chance to see wild deer, turkeys, and other wild life. Out on Naciemento Lake you might even see Bald Eagles as the swoop down to grasp their prey as the waters ripple in the breeze.

So include a beautiful room here at the Adelaide Inn as the center of your retreat at Paso Robles. We will be happy to be your base as you immerse yourself in the wines and sites that are all about Paso Robles.
Sparkling Wine without the Cuvée??

While doing research on several Vineyards in the Paso Robles area for our Winery of the Month Promotion, I came across Cuvée selection of wines. I was surprised to find that some of the vineyards offered Sparkling Wine! I do know that Champagne can only be called Champagne if that pale golden wine with soft bubbles calls from the Champagne Region in France. I did not know that "Cuvée” could apply to other wines beside Sparkling Wine. Yes, I am a novice when it comes to wine terminology and the wonderful varietals that are pouring out of many Paso Robles Wineries. I know that many of you are more knowledgeable about the language of wine but thought there may be a few other novices out there that may appreciate the following general definitions.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia "Cuvée (or Cuvee on some English language labels) is a French wine term derived from cuve, meaning vat or tank. The term cuvée is used with several different meanings… Most wines will have been stored in a vat or tank at some stage of their production.... However, in the range of discerning producers, which market both regular blends and blends called "cuvée...", the cuvée-labelled wines will usually be special blends or selected vats of higher quality, at least in comparison to that producer's regular wine(s). In some regions, the term cuvée is used to specifically indicate a blend, i.e., a wine produced from a mixture of several grape varieties, rather than a varietal wine. This is especially true outside of France.

"Varietal" describes wines made primarily from a single named grape variety, and which typically displays the name of that variety on the wine label. Examples of grape varieties commonly used in varietal wines are Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Merlot. Wines that display the name of two or more varieties on their label, such as a Chardonnay-Viognier, are blends and not varietal wines. The term is frequently misused in place of vine variety; the term variety refers to the vine or grape while varietal refers to the wine produced by a variety."

There is so much more to learn about the simple grape and the wide variety of what grapes can produce under the watchful eye of the winemaker. Visit Paso Robles, stay at the Adelaide Inn, explore the vineyards, talk to the winemakers and treat your palate to a new experience! À bientôt. (See you soon!)

Great, friendly staff and free cookies daily! Feels a bit like a throw back to the 50's but with all new, clean interiors and comfortable beds. Attractive, simple place we found by chance when other bigger name hotels nearby were booked and the others were not at all friendly. Adelaide staff were extremely friendly and helpful with any needs.

Still am eclectic, motel type feel but good for 1-2 night stay or passing through town.
A good deal for a short stay. Friendly, efficient cleaning staff also. Would recommend over other name brands with no character.
