Mid-State midwayenlarge

Carnival rides, concerts, deep-fried treats, wine tasting, horse shows, and plenty of other incredible stuff will soon be happening at the 2016 California Mid-State Fair. “The Biggest Little Fair Anywhere!” celebrates its annual return to the Paso Robles Event Center, July 20th – 31st with classic acts, huge marquees, and performances from some of the biggest names in entertainment. With all kinds of displays, exhibits, entertainment, and rides, there’s something for everyone at the California Mid-State Fair.

CONCERTS

The Chumash Grandstand Arena will light up the night with spectacular musical performances from high-voltage acts. The 2016 Bud Light Concert Series line-up includes: Blake Shelton (sold out), Justin Moore, Fergie, Fall Out Boy, Tim McGraw, Hollywood Vampires, Don Henley, Duran Duran, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, and Brian Williams from Beach Boys fame. These acts are not included in your general admission ticket, so be sure to visit the Mid-State Fair website for ticket availability and information.

Starring on stages throughout the Mid-State Fair will be musical acts covering all genres. These concerts are FREE with your paid admission, but seats are available on a first come, first-served basis. Check out the Fort Frontier Stage for tribute act, Bruce in the USA or legendary rockers Foghat, among others. Or, meander over to Mission Square to hear the infectious sounds of power-folk duo, Bear Market Riot. In total, five stages will be offering up daily performances from a host of captivating musical acts.

NEW THIS YEAR

Fiesta Del Charro, Sunday, July 31st: This classic Mexican-style rodeo competition comes complete with traditional Charros and live Mexican music. The fast-paced rodeo action includes a bull riding competition between American and Mexican Charro riders, trick roping, dancing horses, and Escarmusa (Mexican Drill Team).

Also, new this year — or, should we say, making a comeback, are The World Famous Budweiser Clydesdales. They’ll be making the rounds and stopping throughout the fairgrounds for photo-ops. Missed them? No problem, just head on back to the horse stables for daily viewings and the perfect selfie.

FREE EVENTS

Once inside the fairgrounds, you’ll find plenty of free amusement with your paid admission. Be sure to tour the livestock area to view all the well-tended animals and their doting caretakers. A variety of shows and competitions will be held to crown prize-winning chickens, cattle, rabbits, dogs, goats, and sheep. Equestrian events begin with the 4-H & FFA Horse Show on July 20th, and continue daily with exciting ranch and cutting horse shows, barrel races, team roping, as well as the crowd-drawing cow dog and sheep dog trials.

Throughout the 12 days of the Mid-State Fair, there will be multiple displays of ribbon-worthy arts and crafts, flowers, textiles, and photography projects. Judged events and demonstrations include an Apple Pie Contest, Central Coast Wine Competition, vinegar and olive oil competitions, and homegrown wine and beer brewing competitions. Check out the daily schedule for more (free) activities.

GOOD EATS

Our condolences to your diet, because when it comes to fair food, all bets are off! Funnel cakes, cotton candy, deep-fried…anything – these are the staples of any great fair. But with over 85 food and drink vendors serving up savory delights, you’re sure to find just the right combination of flavors and memories to satisfy your appetite.

If you’re looking for a cozy sit-down meal within walking distance from the fairgrounds, numerous restaurants are just a stone’s throw away. From Big Bubba’s Bad BBQ offering beef ribs, grilled chicken, and salads, to the quick-turnaround sandwich experts at Subway, you’ll have plenty of options.

WHEN TO GO

The Fairgrounds tend to get the most crowded from around 3:00 pm until the sun goes down. So if you want to beat the crowds, and the heat, go at night, as the temperature in Paso can often drop dramatically following sunset. Don’t forget a light sweater!

The fair opens daily at 12:00 pm and closes at midnight. You may beat the crowds if you’re an early bird and arrive at noon. And, if you’re going to a paid concert, arrive early – even if you only care about the main show, try and get there by the opening act.

You’re allowed to bring two unopened water bottles into the fair but all other food and drinks must be finished up before entering. Leave your pups at home and try using the shuttle services, instead of parking, for the most convenient, hassle-free fair experience.
